  15. Announcing Multi-Project Management Tool: DevMan for NEXTSTEP

  17. Cambridge, MA - September 1, 1993 - VNP Software today announced
  18. availability of DevMan, a low cost tool for synchronizing
  19. multi-programmer/ multi-project software development.  DevMan
  20. provides source code control and configuration management support
  21. for projects of any size to expedite the development process.

  23. DevMan's user interface provides programmers with much easier, more
  24. reliable access to source code control functions, e.g., those
  25. available from RCS or SCCS.  Daily tasks, such as checking files
  26. in and out or synchronizing your work area with other developers'
  27. work, can be performed directly from the Workspace Manager's
  28. "Services" menu.  Additional consistency features extend the
  29. usefulness of source-code control - identifying newly added or
  30. modified files during the check-in process, and automatically
  31. removing files that others have deleted from the repository.
  32. DevMan also transparently handles NeXT file packages such as .nib
  33. and .dbmodel directories.

  35. Central to DevMan's design is the concept of "development
  36. branches," which allows parallel independent development in the
  37. same directory.  For example, development branches allow developers
  38. to apply emergency fixes to a protected production branch within a
  39. source-code repository - allowing an easy merge of production fixes
  40. with the active development branch when appropriate.

  42. DevMan uses development branches in conjunction with "configuration
  43. maps" to designate static or dynamic configurations of any set of
  44. source files.  This key feature allows all of the files and
  45. directories for any project to be grouped, maintained, released
  46. and recovered as a single unit, using very simple commands.  DevMan
  47. also offers a security layer that lets you control access to
  48. operations at both the configuration management and source code
  49. control levels.

  53. products," said Jim Loree, Senior Software Analyst, Chrysler
  54. Financial Corporation.  "Our developers rely on DevMan's
  55. synchronization features to coordinate their work, and the
  56. configuration management features are essential for managing our
  57. systems across the development, test and production phases."
